Duties

Employee will exercise a degree of autonomy in performing a full range of activities to assist in managing the day-to-day operations of EMD (e.g., Housekeeping; resource management; program management, program planning and evaluation; and represent EMD in committees as the subject matter expert for all sanitation issues. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Serves as Supervisor of the Environmental Management Department (EMD) in the absence of the Hospital Housekeeping Officer.
  • Assists the Housekeeping Officer in the planning, direction and management of a total program designed to provide a sanitary environment for the hospital and outpatient clinics. This program consists of environmental sanitation, linen distribution and collection, pest control, patient effects, and clothing (receipt, storage, and release), bacteriologic monitoring, employee uniform service, and an ongoing quality monitoring and improvement activities. Serves as consultant to management on improvement and development projects, to include training managers and supervisors.
  • Formulates and recommends policy, procedures and cleaning guidelines covering broad areas of the sanitary medical center environment.
  • Establishes and monitors standards for sanitation quality; for work quantity; for frequency of operations; and directly or through subordinate work supervisors, for individual work performance.
  • Establishes quality assurance indicators to provide the means of evaluating the sanitation program, to include monitoring and formal inspections of all covered areas daily.
  • Provision of staff assistance and guidance to management on the most appropriate actions to take in environmental sanitation activities to affect controls over possible cross infection or spread of disease.
  • Manages employee uniforms purchased, issued, stored, repaired, and salvaged for patient clothing.
  • Manages an effective Pest Control Program within guidelines established by the VA, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Michigan Pesticide Office. A safe, yet effective program is developed and maintained with a formalized program of areas requiring recurring treatment. Treatment methods are broken down by product, equipment, time, and quantity.
  • Responsible for the receipt, storage, and release of patient clothing, effects, and valuables and for the administration of the Patient Assistance Program in coordination with patient care services.
  • Conducts tests and experiments including bacteriological monitoring and testing of supplies and equipment.
  • Assists the Housekeeping Officer for monitoring contract services such as drapery cleaning, window washing, waste management, and environmental maintenance contract services.
  • Undertakes or participates in special projects, ongoing analyses, investigations, and initiatives that have high priority. Produces complex analysis and written reports.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience in two or more of the following areas, or other work related to the position to be filled:

  • Experience that demonstrated a practical working knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, biology, and bacteriology as applied to environmental sanitation, infection control, and to the choice and use of antimicrobial agents in the disinfection, sanitization, and/or sterilization of surfaces and equipment.
  • Experience in laundry and linen management.
  • Experience in interior design management.
  • Experience that demonstrated a knowledge of waste management, including the requirements relating to hazardous, toxic, and infectious wastes and provisions for their final disposition.
  • Experience that demonstrated a knowledge of pest management, including alternative methods of control and the selection and application of chemicals. OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related, with a major study in public health or business administration with emphasis in hospital administration. OR



COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (in excess of 2 years) and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.
