Position Summary


Responsible to conduct professional investigations regarding public property and bodily injury claims where Company personnel and/or assets may be involved. They develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be subject matter experts in determining liability, properly documenting investigative findings, and negotiating settlements. They are required on a rotational basis to respond to and investigate major incidents on behalf of the Legal Department. Investigators provide litigation support and training on risk mitigation processes to assigned business areas, as needed, or requested.



Essential Responsibilities

  • Public Property and Bodily Injury Investigations - involve processing Public Claim Applications, gathering, and documenting facts, determining liability and/or negotiating settlements within department guidelines and assigned approval authority. Ensuring proper file documentation, denial notification or payment is made to claimants in accordance with department guidelines. Mediate between customers and company contractors when required. Providing facts and observations to Legal Counsel as requested.

  • Major Incident Investigations - requires responding to and investigating incident scenes involving the public, including but not limited to electric contacts, structure fires and explosion events. Investigators are required to participate in a rotational on-call schedule to respond to and investigate various incidents on behalf of the legal department as required or requested. They respond to the incident location, control, and ensure safety at the site, document the incident site with photographs and measurements, gather facts, identify, and collect evidence, and build complete incident files following the incident. This may require witness interviews relative to the incident.

  • Litigation Support - When required Investigators will provide litigation support including strategic planning, data gathering, and participation in mediation, settlement conferences, and court proceedings. Under the direction of Legal Counsel, ensure case facts are thoroughly investigated, and documented and that physical and electronic evidence is collected and retained, as required. Investigators ensure that case files are complete and accurate. They collaborate with Legal Counsel on case management, reserve funding, and settlement resolution.

  • Risk Mitigation - Provide focused training to assigned business units to ensure that first responders are trained to take appropriate action when an incident occurs for which the Company may have legal liability. Investigators may develop or participate in specialized training for first responders. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.


Minimum Requirements




  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Availability to be on-call on a rotational basis is required.
  • Position requires exposure to noise, dirt, odors, confined/restricted areas, hot and cold weather conditions.
  • Travel required (e.g., site investigations, court proceedings, etc.).
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record and personal transportation required
  • Post-secondary education or training in business, communications, engineering and/or gas/electric utility industry preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years combined gas/electric utility and/or claims-related work experience or equivalent required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal and state utility laws/regulations (e.g., NSEC, DOT, state PUC, etc.) preferred.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $65,000.00 to $78,000.00 per year
