The City of Thousand Oaks Public Works Department is seeking a responsible and ambitious Emergency Management Intern to join our team for a 6-month internship (with the possibility of extension)! This is a great opportunity for someone interested in breaking into the public sector and eager to gain hands-on experience in emergency management services.  

Maintaining public safety during emergency incidents is a core function and responsibility of the City. The intern position will include educating residents about emergency preparedness and administering a variety of City and County emergency management programs (e.g., Community Emergency Response Team). Please see below for more details on possible job responsibilities included with this internship position. 

The internship will require a commitment of approximately 15-20 hours per week and offers flexible scheduling options to accommodate other commitments, such as school. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Help organize, recruit for, and support the City's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program, including assisting with public outreach and marketing efforts

  • Promote, receive, and organize CERT program applications and follow up with applicants 

  • Assist with updating the new City website

  • Manage databases, including various data entry functions 

  • Research/recommend emergency management products and program services 

  • Gather data and prepare reports on emergency management topics 

  • Participate in field visits to various City facilities 

  • Assist with maintaining the City Mass Casualty Trailer, Portable Emergency Communications Trailer, and the Emergency Operations Center's inventory 

  • Assist the Program Manager with preparing the City's electronic Emergency Management newsletter 

  • Create promotional materials and assist with outreach for a multitude of internal and external City events

  • Act as a City Liaison with the Ventura County Fire Department as needed 

  • Other duties as assigned in the Public Works department, including, but not limited to: Transit Program, record management, and youth/senior outreach

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate should possess: 

  • A degree or major coursework in a relevant field, such as Emergency Management, Safety, Homeland Security, Public or Business Administration, Public Health, and/or Fire Science 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook  

  • A team player mentality - a self-starter who takes initiative on varying assignments and tasks  

  • Strong work ethic - dependability, flexibility, and a willingness to learn

  • A valid class C California driver’s license is required
